Buckley Air Force Base - SFOF

The Buckley Air Force Base Security Forces Operations Facility is a 35,171 square foot facility. The project earned LEED Silver Certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies.  The building’s energy systems consume about 26% less energy and 40% less water as well as have lower operating costs than a similar building constructed to code.

The staff/end users of the facility were participated in the programming of the building; allowing the design to fully understand and provide solutions for their needs. The new facility includes space for investigations, an armory, guard-mount and lockers, supply, a commanders suite, and a mobility storage warehouse. In addition, the facility includes training and break rooms, as well as an area dedicated to a future emergency control center. In addition, the entire project incorporates anti-terrorism elements.

A large effort has been made to utilize materials with recycled content as well as those that are made locally within the region.  Many of the wood products used on the project are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to encourage responsible forest management.  Also low emitting paints, coatings and adhesives were chosen to reduce indoor contaminants that are odorous, irritating or harmful to occupants; thus ensuring healthy clean indoor air quality.  The team also incorporated strategies to minimize ‘heat island effect’.   These strategies included using roof and hardscape materials that reflect solar heat as well as providing shade from tree canopies. An estimated 75% of the construction waste will be recycled and diverted from the landfill.  In addition, construction activity pollution prevention strategies were utilized to reduce pollution from construction activities on the project interior and exterior.  These include construction indoor air quality management strategies during construction as well as by controlling soil erosion, waterway sedimentation and airborne dust generation outside.
