Alpine Bank - Ridgway
The Alpine Bank in Ridgway, CO earned LEED-NC Silver Certification. The facility is estimated to use 40% less energy than a comparable baseline building built to code through the following features:
- A highly efficient geothermal HVAC system that provides exceptional heating and cooling comfort while the refrigerants do not contribute to ozone depletion or global warming
- A highly efficient lighting system utilizing innovative LED technologies
- Low-e windows that are insulated and operable to allow occupants to enjoy fresh air and take advantage of natural heating and cooling patterns
- The tight and very thermal resistant building envelope is constructed of insulated concrete forms (ICF) on the main floor and 2x6 stud walls with blown in cellulose on the second floor
To decrease energy consumption and cooling loads from “heat island effects” the project uses materials that reflect the sun’s heat rather than absorbing it; such as an open grid pavement system, light colored concrete and a roof with a low Solar Reflective Index (SRI). In addition to the open grid pavement, the site has a stormwater collection and on-site infiltration system to protect the nearby Uncompahgre River from excessive erosion. The bank uses low flow fixtures for a 40% reduction in indoor water consumption while the landscaping consists of native or adept low-water consuming plantings.
During construction an estimated 50% of debris was recycled and/or diverted from the landfill. The project also utilized locally quarried rock, which helped save transportation costs, reduce carbon emissions, supports the local economy and allows the building to reflect the natural surroundings. To encourage and facilitate alternative transportation, the location has preferred parking spaces for hybrid vehicles as well as bicycle racks and a shower/changing room for employees.
